Country Fayre & Horticultural Autumn Show
This is a record of the event in 2019 – it may be possible to stage something similar in 2021
Saturday 14th September 2019 11am – 5pm
on The Green and St Mary’s Church
Westerham Town Partnership and Westerham Horticultural Society will be celebrating all that is country crafts, activities and produce, alongside local vintage, retro and fashion stalls with A Country Fayre on The Green.
Westerham Horticultural Society will hold their Autumn Show St Mary’s Church, with the very best of autumn harvest. The competition is open to everyone, and details on how to enter can be found on the Horticultural Society website
Visit the stall of the Kent Wildlife Trust to collect the wildlife quiz and trail questions, in and around the churchyard, and learn about Forest Schools. Do you have plans for a family pet? Foal Farm are on hand with advice and guidance for helping a new furry friend take a special place in your home. Ever wondered what goes on inside a beehive? Wow the family with a visit to our bee-keepers who have a skeleton-hive that you can look through. And you can buy some delicious organic honey too.
Visit our coconut shy and old-fashioned fairground at the bottom of the Green – you’ll have the ride of your life on the vintage chair-o-plane, they don’t make them like that anymore! Have your seaside photo taken with ‘Aunt Sally’, you’ll never be dressed on the beach like that again 😉 Try your hand at games like hoopla, quoits, tombola, ‘whip the cloth’, wet sponge stocks, tin-pan Alley, and shove h’apenny, with prizes to be won.
Don’t forget it’s a laugh a minute with Punch and Judy at 1 o’clock and 3 o’clock – lots of family fun, not to mention the odd crocodile and some sausages… get decorated with Honey Bee Face Painting, while Mum and Dad relax with cakey-tea and the tiny-tots enjoy our ball-pond in the Foodie tent – crazy colours of fun. This and other goodies provided by The Courtyard, a BBQ from Westerham Sea Cadets, plus all your favourite food outlets around the Green.
At the top corner of the Green by the noticeboard, woodland characters are born. Don’t miss Alasdair from Sussex Chainsaw who created our OWL, SQUIRREL and OTTER who will be back to demonstrate his skills. Watch him carve birds, fish and owls from a fallen tree using nothing but a chain-saw.
Try the Stocks for size but keep a good distance from the chainsaw! A chance to throw wet sponges at your friends & family, grand memories for the kids 🙂
Our friend John Burbage, the ‘bodger’, will be here again with his traditional pole lathe. Can a young tree provide living power for a wood carver? Visit John with his pole lathe at the top of the Green to find out more about this ancient craft.
Music for the day will be the usual eclectic mix: and a surprise or two! Our good buddy Ian Fox will kick off our music offering, and for the first time, local Westerham man, Pete Savory’s band Groovestew will be performing – check them out below. We will also be welcoming old friend James Yoxall with new young talent from The Knole Academy.
